Academic Excellence: You must hold a PhD degree in a relevant field, including:

Physics (all branches)

Physical Chemistry

Related areas of the Life Sciences

Visa Status: You must not hold any visa for temporary or permanent residency in India or any developed country.

Language Proficiency: Proficiency in English is required. Evidence must be provided if your prior education was not in English.

Your Pathway to Kolkata: The Application Journey

A successful application is built on preparation and partnership. Follow these steps to position yourself as a strong candidate:

1. Secure Your Research Partnership (The Most Critical Step)

Your first task is to identify and connect with a department and a potential research supervisor at the S.N. Bose National Centre whose expertise aligns with your own. Explore their website, review faculty profiles, and read their publications. Reach out with a compelling research idea and your CV.

2. Obtain an Acceptance Letter

This is mandatory. You must request and receive a formal Acceptance Letter from the host department at SNBC. This letter confirms that the centre is familiar with your work and willing to host you and provide the necessary resources. Applications without this letter will not be considered.

3. Prepare and Submit Your Online Application

All applications must be submitted through the official TWAS online portal. The system is designed to be intuitive, but ensure you allocate ample time to complete it thoroughly. You will need to provide:

Your detailed CV and publication list.

Your research proposal outline.

Scanned copies of your academic certificates.

Evidence of English proficiency (if required).

The crucial Acceptance Letter from SNBC.

4. Mark the Deadline: Your Application Must Be Submitted By September 22, 2025.

The portal will close on this date. Do not wait until the last minute. Technical issues or last-minute queries to your host supervisor could jeopardise your submission.

A Vital Note: You may apply for only one TWAS or OWSD programme per calendar year. Please plan your applications strategically.

Fellowship Provisions: Investing in Your Potential

Selected fellows will receive comprehensive support to ensure they can focus entirely on their research:

A generous monthly stipend to cover all living costs, such as food, accommodation, and local transportation.

Round-trip airfare from your home country to Kolkata.

Specialised visa assistance and guidance.

Access to on-site medical facilities.

A one-time allowance for incidental expenses.

(Please note: Fellows are financially responsible for any accompanying family members, though the Centre can often provide guidance on housing and schooling options.)

Answering Your Questions

Q: What if I haven't finalised my research proposal?

A: Your initial communication with a potential supervisor should include a clear, concise research idea. The proposal can be refined together once they express interest.

Q: I'm concerned about the language barrier outside the lab.

A: While the scientific working language is English, Kolkata is a cosmopolitan city. You will find English widely spoken in academic circles and urban areas, making daily life manageable and enriching.

Q: How competitive is the selection process?

A: Extremely. The fellowship seeks the best and brightest. A strong application is characterised by a clear and innovative research plan, a proven track record of academic excellence (publications), and a demonstrable commitment to contributing to science in your home country.

Take the First Step Toward a Transformative Year

This is your moment to accelerate your research, gain international experience, and bring valuable knowledge back to your home institution. Don't let this opportunity pass you by.

The journey begins with a single step: initiating a conversation with a scientist at the S.N. Bose Centre.
